Up until the 1970s or so, Blue Lake business was dominated by the MacIntosh Lumber Mill located here. After the mill shut down, the city was forced to undergo changes. Today Blue Lake's businesses are concentrated in 3 main sectors. There is the Industrial Park, the site of the former mill, which now has a power plant, some light industry, and business rental space available for non-retail use. Next, there are a number of small retail and consumer oriented businesses most of which are located in the downtown core area. Last, there is an array of home-based businesses spread throughout the City operated by individual entrepreneurs and serving not only the local community, but often, through the power of the internet, the entire world.
An exciting update to the City of Blue Lake's economy is the introduction of the Blue Lake Artisan's Collective. The Collective is part of the Ink People's Dream Maker program, and is an effort to bring the artisans in Blue Lake and immediate surrounding sphere of influence, to one location for a unique shopping experience. The Grand Opening of the Collective will be on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. - coinciding with the Mad River Grange Breakfast.
